About Me

I am a Philadelphia based multimedia artist whose practice centers on paper and wire as sculptural materials. Working primarily by hand, I combine cutting, quilling, papier-mâché and other techniques to create intricate three-dimensional forms that exist on a continuum between natural and fantastical forms.

Raised in a family of artists and craftspeople, I developed an early appreciation for making by hand, experimentation and the melding of varying techniques. My current practice has developed through years of independent experimentation with paper and sculptural processes. Beginning with freestanding floral forms, I became increasingly interested in pushing familiar techniques beyond the flat surface and into dimensional and complex worlds. Freestanding sculptures and boxed works have developed concurrently, allowing for different approaches to materials, space, composition, and presentation.

Each sculpture develops through an extended process of cutting, shaping, folding, layering, and assembling, often requiring more than 100 hours to complete. Repetition and sustained attention are fundamental to my process. Every work begins with an overall composition, a color story, or an exploration of a narrative, but much of the work develops through the act of making. Hundreds and sometimes thousands of individual decisions accumulate as a work progresses, allowing for unexpected forms, relationships and individual moments of discovery to become part of the finished piece.

In many of my works, custom boxes serve as portals inviting the viewer in to participate. Light is integral to these compositions, creating depth and shadow while intensifying the saturated color of paper. Across all sculptures, I continue to explore how ordinary materials can be transformed through time, repetition, color and accumulation into structures that feel complex, unexpected, and often detached from reality.
